First Hit: I was, and even a day later, confused by this story and film. We're really introduced to Cristi (Vlad Ivanov) and Gilda (Catrinel Marlon) when Gilda walks up to Cristi and asks to speak with him in his apartment. Cristi whispers into her ear that he apartment is bugged, so she kisses him and tells him she'll play the part of a hooker, and they can whisper her request, which is to help her by getting a criminal, Zsolt, out of prison. In an early scene, Cristi is on a ferry heading to an island where the ancient people use to communicate by whistling. Cristi is part of a plot working with other criminals to free Zsolt and to do this he has to learn the whistling language. The language breaks vowels and consonants into seven whistling sounds. This lesson in this language was the most exciting part of the film. I was fascinated with Cristi learning how to whistle and wanted to practice, along with him, right in the theater. As the film develops, some parts led me to believe that the story in the movie was pre-planned, and I missed something as the film progressed. At other times, I felt as though Cristi and Gilda were planning the ending along the way because they'd fallen for each other. As an undercover detective, Cristi works for an unnamed woman place by Rodica Lazar, who is trying to play both ends of this story. The result is a film that has the appearance of a storyline running at two different levels, but in the end, the person sitting next to me asked if he missed something about how the ending worked out, I said "I don't know, and I still don't. Ivanov was quietly compelling as the detective who was also on the take. Marlon was excellent as the woman who seemed totally in control of story behind the plot. Lazar was strong as the head of the investigation and also susceptible to corruption. Corneliu Porumboiu wrote and directed this quizzical story that left me hanging. Straight off, this movie is totally different to what you may be used when thinking about Romanian movies. Starting with the story, the cast (Catrinel Marlon is magnificent) the scenery, smart humor and hidden little gems (references to various famous scenes in other movies) this film makes you think you're watching more of a Hollywood movie than a Romanian one, although, as a downside, I must say certain characters seem to be portrayed a bit simplistic.
The story is, to some extent, a typical police one, but the twist of using the whistling language from Gomera Island enriches the plot all around as it unfolds.
I really liked the movie and I would be happy if it sets the new trend in Romanian Cinema.

In reality, it's very twisty, complex neo-noir, which is fine. I was attracted to the film partly because I had heard it was funny, but it isn't (although there is a little bit of wry/cynical humor. Misrepresenting a movie's genre sets it up to fail with viewers, who go in expecting something different.
If you do like neo-noir crime dramas with a lot of references to past classic films (both Romanian and American) this is definitely one to check out. It has a great soundtrack as well.

So, for whatever reason, you want to download stuff and not get a virus … or get arrested? Here’s what you should know first. I was a bit hesitant to write this article, as it’s (potentially) kind of a sketchy area. Yet, a few clients have asked me how torrenting works, so I thought I’d provide a basic overview that should be workable for most normal people. If you’re a serious tech person ( e. g., if you even know what “using a Tor browser” means), this won’t be the write-up you’re looking for. Rather, it’s meant more for the casual PC or Mac user just looking to safely mess around with torrents. Okay, let’s get started. First thing: What is torrenting? Well, I could get into all of the tech mumbo-jumbo (terms and explanations for P2P, seeding, leeching, etc. ), but to be perfectly honest, when most people ask me what torrenting is, they really mean this: How do you download movies, music, software, etc. from the Internet? Truly, torrenting is super-interesting and useful technology. And, I’m sure, in many ways, it’s also applicable to perfectly legal pursuits. But, a giant percentage of what it’s used for daily, frankly, is for downloading things illegally — movies, music, software, and other types of files (that one is not generally supposed to). I don’t recommend anyone do anything illegal. But, I also think more people should understand how this works, as there are many legitimate uses here. So, let’s get going! VPNs basically take away the means by which any such activity can be traced back to you. You have an IP address, as you probably know. And any time you interact with another server, you can assume that your IP address is logged. It’s the same with torrenting. Whatever you’re downloading, there’s a record (perhaps multiple records) of your IP address having done that. So, you (probably) need or want to circumvent that. And, frankly, having a VPN in place is a handy thing for other practical and security reasons these days, as well. There’s nothing sketchy or red-flag-ish about having / using a VPN. A company I like is called Private Internet Access. (I’m not affiliated with them. That’s just a normal link. ) It’s ~$40/year, and well worth it. I like their site, too — which, atop each page, attempts to identify where you are and who your ISP is. For example, if I’m not signed in, it says: Screen grab showing the VPN site Private Internet Access So, without the VPN, it knows I’m at that IP and that it’s CenturyLink (my ISP). It also says, therefore, that I’m “not protected. ” When you sign up and install the software, you get a little screen that pops up to turn it on or off: Screen grab showing Private Internet Access control panel when disconnected. The big yellow button indicates that I’m not connected. So, when I press the button, it connects, and then the screen changes: Screen grab showing Private Internet Access control panel when connected. So, now you see my IP, and the VPN’s IP. Which means that, when I go back to the page I showed before (that tries to identify me), it also changes: Screen grab showing a web browser look at Private Internet Access’ site when connected to the VPN. So now anytime I do anything online, the world sees me as the VPN’s IP address and not my own. (Some readers may think: Well sure, but what if the VPN company logs my traffic? That’s a clever thought, and a valid concern! But, in short, they do not log your traffic. ) This page lists about a dozen VPN providers, and has some useful background info as well. Before I go on, I just want to reiterate that using a VPN is a smart and handy thing to do for many reasons beyond torrenting. It’s a great all-around security practice, for example — especially for those who work remotely from time to time. (I do quite a bit, and I always use my VPN for that reason! ) One other note is that some sites that you use regularly do not (or will not) like the fact that you’re using a VPN. Netflix, for example, often knows when I have it on, and refuses to show most content until I disable it. That’s because some companies track IPs associated with many VPNs. So, you have to kind of work with those situations. Hulu and other content-streaming sites also tend to dislike VPNs — likely because they’re bound by copyright laws that they do not want to run afoul of. There are many setup configuration considerations with VPNs, but those are beyond the scope of this article. I’ll just say that, if you’re going to do any kind of torrenting (even just for educational purposes), make sure you have a VPN in place and that it is engaged before you do anything. If you’re not from the U. S., like I am, look into any applicable laws regarding VPN use, as it’s not legal everywhere. The next thing you’ll need to do any torrenting is some software to handle it. I think the most reliable, standard client would be μTorrent. Don’t ever download it from anywhere but the official site:. It’s been a while since I’ve installed uTorrent. But, in general, anytime you’re installing software, pay special attention to the various options available upon install, as many companies like to bundle their core software with other junk that you simply don’t want — things like browsers, add-ins, anti-virus trials, etc. Decline all of that extra stuff when you’re installing and stick with the core, which is safe if you get the software from the official source linked to here. Once you have that running, it looks like this: Screen grab of the uTorrent software client. In fact, just in general: Don’t ever download software from anywhere but the official source. And that goes for torrenting, as well. You may want to find a “free” or “cracked” version of a piece of commercial software, but screwing around with software downloads is just too risky, in my opinion. Think of it this way: You definitely don’t want to download anything that you’ll need to install or run, or anything that can run scripts, even. So, what types of files should you never download? Well, here’s a good article on that! (Remember that this link is here, as you’ll want to come back to it once you understand more about what you’ll be doing! ) Okay, so now you have your VPN engaged, and you have your uTorrent software installed. Now you need to find whatever it is you’re looking for. And, to be honest, this part feels kind of sketchy because you’re going to have to visit some sites that just don’t seem “normal. ” You’ll know right away that you’re not reading Medium, at any rate — and so this is probably where you’ll start to feel in doubt, generally, about whatever it is you’re doing. So, one quick note before you begin. I tend to prefer Chrome as my usual browser. If you really want to get serious about torrenting and all of the security concerns involved, you could do worse than to learn about the Tor browser. Here’s a link to get you started. That’s the “about” page on the official web site. Tor aside, though… If you’re going to use Chrome (which is probably fine in most cases), you might want to consider at least doing your business in an “incognito” window. To do that, simply have Chrome open and click Control+Shift+N. This opens a new tab that won’t store your history or other data. Also, in this tab, you won’t be auto-signed-in to anything like Google or Medium or Facebook. It’s a completely blank slate! It should look like this: Screen grab from an incognito window on Chrome. Next up, you need to go to a site that allows you to search out torrents. Probably the most popular one is called The Pirate Bay. It’s at. You may find the site inaccessible from time to time, as I suspect they move operations around a good bit and/or they do maintenance. Nevertheless, they seem to be the leader. It looks like this: Screen grab from The Pirate Bay web site. There are, of course, tons of other torrent-search sites out there. I’ll leave that to you to research and try out, as you like. A few words of caution on these sites: (1) They’re generally going to run all sorts of ads that won’t be suitable for kids or bosses to see; (2) They may well link directly to sites you don’t want to go to, for all sorts of reasons; (3) They often have pop-up ads and all kinds of other scripts running. So, using these sites can be challenging! On handy trick, which you can do on any site (btw), is to immediately disable JavaScript. Here’s a trick you can use if you’re getting a lot of popups and crazy lags on a site like this: Right-click anywhere on the screen and choose “Inspect”. (Sometimes sites like this will have a script that opens an ad page when you right-click. So, don’t freak out if you lose your tab for a moment — just close the ad page and retry the right-click. ) Anyway, this brings up the Inspector panel, sometimes on the same browser, sometimes in a standalone window. It’ll look something like this: Screen grab of the Chrome Inspector (on the left). Once that shows, hit F1 and it’ll bring up the Settings menu. Scroll down until you see the “Debugger” section, and there you can check the box next to “Disable JavaScript”: Screen grab from Chrome Settings panel. Keep the Inspector window open for a moment, though, as you’re going to need to disable JavaScript again in a minute. For now, though, let’s do a search. For our purposes here, let’s keep everything on the up-and-up by searching out something that is in the public domain. This page on Wikipedia lists a bunch of movies in the public domain, so let’s pick one as an example: Yep, multiple-sources list this film as public domain, so let’s use this as our example search here. Okay, with our sample film selected, let’s search for “The Last Man on Earth. ” That’ll bring you to the search results page, which looks like this: Screen grab from The Pirate Bay search results. Before you do anything else, you may want to re-disable Javascript, as shown above because, often on these types of sites, anything you click or change (even typing into the search box) might launch another popup window. So, disabling Javascript usually ends such annoyances. Okay back to our results… Note that there are other results that came up here besides the public domain film we were seeking. Also sharing that title is a series from Fox TV. The fist link there seems to be for that series (which almost certainly IS under copyright and therefore illegal to download). Let’s look at the listing for the one we want (the 1964 public domain movie): Detail from above search results screen grab. There’s a bunch of stuff going on here: The first line with the title “The Last Man on Earth (1964) 1080p BrRip x264 — YIFY” indicates what the file *is*. In this case, we know it’s the 1964 public domain film we were after. The “1080p” tells us that it’s an HD rip of that movie. When you see things like “BrRip” and don’t know what they mean, just do a quick Google search and you’ll soon find out. In this case, “BrRip” means it was ripped from a Blu-Ray release. The “x264” part is a type of video encoding. And the “YIFY” part indicates it’s from a group of people known for distributing movies. Most of this is irrelevant to many users. Most simply want to know the title and quality of the file. You can also click the title to open a new page with the file info on it. For example, this movie’s standalone page looks like this: Torrent info page from The Pirate Bay. The second line, with the little “magnet” icon contains a lot of additional info. It’s good, for example, to look at the file size. This one is 1. 23 gigs, which is a sizable file for a movie-length file. But, it makes sense because it’s ripped at 1080p. Sometimes, if you scroll around on the results, you can find other versions at lower resolutions like 720p. Those files will be smaller (and will download quicker, usually). If you’re watching on a normal computer monitor, 720p may be more than adequate. But, if you have a big TV and want the sharpest picture, then the 1080p will be better. (And, of course, there are other resolutions, bigger and smaller! ) Anyway, the green skull is another positive sign on this site. I won’t go into that fully here, but here’s what it means. And finally the red magnet icon, which is what you’ll click to start the download. (But hold off on that for a minute, as there’s more to look at. ) The far-right two columns of the original screen shot show “SE” and “LE. ” That stands for “seeders” and “leechers. ” It’s pretty self-explanatory: Seeders are the number of people hosting the file for download; leechers are the number of people downloading it. So, the more seeders, the better because the file will generally download faster. As much as those numbers are helpful and general indicators, I’m not so sure they’re 100% accurate at all times, as people come and go often. You’ve found the one you want (the legal one! ), and you’ve got your VPN engaged. So, go ahead and click the magnet link! That’s going to probably lead to an alert popup saying “Open uTorrent? ” Click yes, and it’ll get things started for you. Let’s now review that process. Initially, you’ll see two windows come up: Screen grab showing what happens when you click on a magnet file. The topmost one is a little control panel about the file itself. On the left, you see it allows you to save it where ever you like, and whether to create a subfolder there for it (and, if so, the name of the subfolder). On the right side is a list of files included in that torrent. Let’s have a look here, as this is something I recommend always reviewing closely before launching it. That side of the screen looks like this: A list of files in this torrent. Note that I’ve unchecked the JPG, as I don’t want it! You can see right away that there are just two here. One is the film itself, an MP4 file (which is nice and safe), and a standalone JPG file that the people who made this package threw in there as a promo. Cool as that is for them, you didn’t come here to download a bunch of JPGs. So, only check the movie file. (Uncheck the JPG! ) I mention this here because, often, you’ll be presented with a bunch of useless (and potentially dangerous) crap. Sometimes, you’ll see many folders listed. And, I can’t stress strongly enough: Review everything! If there are folders, open them all and look at every file. Remember the maxim: An ounce of prevention equals a pound of cure. So don’t ever just download everything without looking at what you’re doing. So, I’ve unchecked the JPG (mainly b/c it’s junk, not because it’s dangerous), and only left the movie. Now, I click OK and it’ll start the torrent. In no time, the torrent gets going, and you can see a progress bar showing the download completion percentage, download speed, and upload speed. (It shows download speed because you’re downloading it; it shows upload speed because you may now be sharing parts of the file with others who are getting it from you. ) Detail on uTorrent client showing download. The uTorrent client has informative help files, as well, that go into more detail. But, the above covers 99% of it. After your download completes, you would navigate to where ever you saved it to, double-click that MP4 file, and voila: Screen grab from the public domain movie we just downloaded via this example. Don’t forget: Now that you’re done downloading that movie, you probably don’t want to leave the uTorrent client running. After all, you may disengage your VPN and then you’d be seeding (uploading content) via your own actual IP (which is technically okay if you’re torrenting public domain movies like we’ve done here). And, in the general spirit of Peer to Peer file sharing, it’s nice to seed and not always leech! But still, in order to maintain control over your practices and habits, I recommend you close uTorrent when you’re done. So, go to File → Exit, and/or go to the bottom of your desktop, click the icons, and right-click/EXIT on the uTorrent one. Right click on the uTorrent and select EXIT to quit completely. Read further on any topics, above, that I didn’t cover in-depth enough to make you comfortable. Don’t do anything until you’re confident! Stay safe always. Don’t download software and/or anything that might get you into trouble or contain viruses. Research torrent list/search sites before just Googling them and going there. Dvd movie meet me in st. louis. Meet me in st louis tv movie. Justly legendary musical from MGM. It's just the sort of lavish production the studio specialized in. Nothing too serious beyond romantic mix-ups, along with happy endings you can count on. It's also perfectly cast with little Tootie (O'Brien) stealing the film under heavy competition from a starry-eyed Garland. Note that except for dad (Ames) the men have clearly secondary roles. Note too that it's the girls who get to flounce around in wardrobe's best period frocks, and a sight they are. The musical selections are outstanding. I especially enjoyed Tootie and Es's (Garland) cute little song and dance, Under The Bamboo Tree. And, just for spice, Tootie singing that she won't get drunk anymore! That is, when she's not plotting dark mischief.

It tells the story of a turn-of-the-century family in suburban, midwestern St. Louis of 1903, who live in a stylish Edwardian home at 5135 Kensington Avenue. The city, and the well-to-do Smith family (with four beautiful daughters), is on the verge of hosting (and celebrating) the arrival of the spectacular 1904 World's Fair. However, the family's head of the house is beckoned to New York due to a job promotion - an uprooting move that threatens to indelibly change the lives of the family members forever. Filmed during WWII, the decision to remain in St. Louis in the film's conclusion affirmed that nothing will be altered for the American family. This gem of cinematic, picture-postcard Americana and youthful romance, is richly filmed in Technicolor. It marked the beginning of the golden age of MGM musicals (and producer Arthur Freed's unit), and ultimately became the second most successful film for MGM (behind Gone With the Wind (1939)). The story is based on the book of the same name from Sally Benson's memoirs of her life in St. Louis, Missouri from 1903-4 - they were recalled and written in multiple issues of The New Yorker Magazine from 1941-1942 (originally published under the title "5135 Kensington" and eventually gathered together as The Kensington Stories). The slice-of-life musical was only Minnelli's third film (after the all-black musical Cabin in the Sky (1943) and the musi-comedy I Dood It (1943) with Red Skelton) and it was Minnelli's first full-length film in color. After their marriage, Garland and Minnelli also worked together on The Clock (1945) and The Pirate (1948). Meet Me in St. Louis was nominated for four Academy Awards (without any Oscar wins): Best Screenplay (Irving Brecher and Fred F. Finklehoffe), Best Color Cinematography (George Folsey), Best Song ("The Trolley Song" with music and lyrics by Ralph Blane and Hugh Martin), and Best Scoring of a Musical Picture (Georgie Stoll). The film's awards promotion was subverted by MGM's support of its suspense thriller and gothic melodrama Gaslight (1944). However, young star Margaret O'Brien was awarded a Special (miniature) Oscar as the most outstanding child actress of the year. Although the Winter segment is one of the shortest vignettes, the film is still considered a favorite Christmas movie. The Story Summer, 1903 The First Vignette opens with a static view of a greeting card (or family album snapshot) picturing a lovely, sepia-colored Victorian house in St. Louis, Missouri. When the camera zooms in, the picture springs into an animated, full-color enlargement, showing the mansard-roofed home with dormer windows and a veranda, surrounded by green lawn. The camera tracks down the unpaved street, following an open, horse-drawn wagon carrying Circle Star Beer. It then turns left to track up the lawn, following a young man (son Lon) riding his bicycle onto the Smith house's lawn. The summer scene dissolves into the kitchen. There over the stove, happy housewife Mrs. Anna Smith (Mary Astor) is making ketchup, testing and critiquing its taste with Katie (Marjorie Main), the household's maid. [The opening scene is centered around everyone in the family tasting the ketchup simmering on the kitchen stove, and humming the film's title song. ] Two of the five children enter, only son Alonzo "Lon" Jr. (Henry H. Daniels, Jr. ), casually humming a bit of the tune of the title song after setting down a load of groceries. (The title song is sung by the whole family in the house. ) Then, second-youngest daughter Agnes (child star Joan Carroll) comes in, her bloomers still wet from swimming. As she walks through the kitchen, through the hallway and up the stairs, she picks up the song: "Meet Me In St. Louis. Outside, he sees auburn-haired Smith daughter Esther (Judy Garland, a twenty-two year old playing a seventeen year old - and off-screen already showing signs of future neuroticism), and her friends pull up in front of the house in a pony cart. Alighting from the cart, Esther carries a tennis racket and enters the kitchen. Back in the kitchen, more taste-testing results in different opinions about the ketchup recipe. Esther whispers a secret request to Katie - exhorting her to arrange to have dinner served an hour earlier than usual, something that normally wouldn't be approved. Katie snaps at Esther's white lie after permission is granted: A lie's a lie, and dressed in white don't help it. Katie asks Esther why she was asked to lie. Esther explains that eldest sister - a second auburn-haired daughter Rose (Lucille Bremer in her film debut), unmarried at twenty, expects to receive a long-distance call at 6:30 pm from New York City from a far-off, admiring beau named Warren Sheffield (Robert Sully). Rose needs privacy to maneuver a proposal out of her boyfriend, because the phone is located in the dining room: "She may be loathe to say the things a girl's compelled to say to get a proposal out of a man. " Katie comments on Rose's use of the telephone - a new invention: Personally, I wouldn't marry a man who proposed to me over an invention. Katie announces the arrival of a coquettish Rose, sauntering up to the front steps of the house: "There's the poor old maid now. " Standing on the neighboring lawn is a young, handsome Boy-Next-Door dressed in white with a pipe firmly in his teeth, a new neighbor named John Truett (Tom Drake). Rose gazes at him, trying to attract a glance while entering the house. Rose quickly persuades Esther to join her and stand on the front porch to look at the boy. Attempting to be non-chalant, both desperately want to be noticed and admired. Unsuccessful in attracting his attention, he is oblivious to them and imperviously wanders inside. Rose thinks: "He's not very neighborly, I must say. " They also go inside their house, where they anticipate the evening's events. When Esther reminds Rose of her fateful phone call, stuck-up Rose disdainfully mentions her disinterest in boys before drifting upstairs to wash her hair: My dear, when you get to be my age, you'll find out there are more important things in life than boys. Unconvinced of that fact, a winsome Esther gazes toward the camera with a dreamy look, cued up to sing a soliloquy of longing with a lush, rich voice, "The Boy Next Door. " She muses about her beloved: The moment I saw him smile I knew he was just my style My only regret is we've never met Though I dream of him all the while Esther ambles over to the window seat, sitting and looking out over the neighbor's place in the direction of the Boy-Next-Door ("at 5133") as she continues singing about her crush on the teenager who lives closeby: How can I ignore the Boy Next Door? I love him more than I can say Doesn't try to please me, doesn't even tease me And he never sees me glance his way And though I'm heartsore, the Boy Next Door Affection for me won't display I just adore him, so I can't ignore him The Boy Next Door During the playing of the song's melody, Esther primps and prances in front of the hallway mirror, and then does a little dance with herself at the foot of the stairs. She returns to her window vantage point to repeat the final two lines, lovingly photographed with a rapturous closeup of her secret longing expressed in song: With a last lingering glance out the window, she slowly releases a translucent, white lace muslin curtain at the edge of the window - bewitchingly, it falls in front of her as the song ends. A closeup of the tureen of the batch of ketchup being stirred in the kitchen dissolves into view. Fussing continues over the ketchup's taste when Grandpa pronounces it "too thick. " Agnes bursts into the kitchen looking for her cat named Little Babbie. No-nonsense Katie brags about having kicked it down the cellar stairs, joking: Katie: I could hear its spine hit on every step. Agnes: Oh, oh, if you killed her, I'll kill you! I'll stab you to death in your sleep and then I'll tie your body to two wild horses 'til you're pulled apart. To Agnes' relief, the cat is found closeby in the kitchen. While preparing cabbage at the sink, Mrs. Smith advises Rose about her anticipated phone call: "If I were you, I wouldn't commit myself one way or all, we know very little about him. Why, we haven't even met his folks. " She also suggests keeping it a secret from Mr. Smith, due home shortly from work: "Not a word of this to Papa. You know how he plagues the girls about their beaus. " Esther enters the kitchen and asks where 'Tootie, ' the youngest Smith family member is. Nonchalantly, Mrs. Smith replies: "Oh I suppose she's working on the ice wagon. " In the next scene on Kensington Avenue, precocious five year old 'Tootie' (Margaret O'Brien) is shown blissfully happy, helping the ice man Mr. Neely (Chill Wills) on his horse-drawn ice-wagon rounds. She sits on the back of the wagon, sucking a piece of ice and singing a few bars of "Brighten the Corner. " 'Tootie' joins Mr. Neely in the front seat, where they begin a marvelous discussion about the near-death state of her favorite doll, Margaretha. 'Tootie' is pleasurably interested in gruesome games and the macabre, but frets about her pale-looking doll. She is seriously discussing her mortally-sick doll's fate and preparing to bury it: 'Tootie': I expect she won't live through the night. She has four fatal diseases. Mr. Neely: And it only takes one. 'Tootie': But she's gonna have a beautiful funeral in a cigar box my Papa gave me, all wrapped in silver paper. Mr. Neely: That's the way to go if you have to go. 'Tootie': Oh, she has to go. The conversation shifts to a new subject - the town of "St. Louis" - Mr. Neely mispronounces it. She corrects him and tells him the proper pronunciation. In a low-angle shot tilting upwards, the two girls are to the right of the frame, with a ceramic miniature of twin Victorian damsels above the piano to the left of the frame. Breaking the spell, a very hot and grumpy Mr. Alonzo Smith (Leon Ames), the well-to-do lawyer and head of the household trudges up to the house after work at the office and squelches their performance in the parlor: "For heaven's sakes, stop that screeching! " Wiping his sweaty brow, he collapses into a chair and mutters: That song. The fair won't open for seven months. That's all everybody sings about or talks about. I wish everybody would meet at the fair and leave me alone. His day has been miserable - he's lost a case. When the 'Lord and Master' of the house arrives, after slipping on one of 'Tootie's' carelessly-discarded skates, he wants a leisurely meal, but Katie the maid hurriedly speeds everyone through each course. He answers and then hangs up the phone the first time it rings, chided by Esther and then informed: "You've just ruined Rose's chance to get married, that's was Warren Sheffield calling long-distance to propose. " The only member of the family unaware of the expected phone call is Papa, and he feels like an outsider: Just when was I voted out of this family? When the phone rings a second time, Rose answers and hesitantly (but yelling throughout in order to be heard) speaks to Warren while the entire family hangs on her every word. During the phone conversation, Mrs. Smith closes the window to keep the neighbors from overhearing. Rose is unable to coax Warren to propose, though Esther looks on the bright side and breaks the ice: "Well, I'll bet there isn't another girl in St. Louis who's had a Yale man call her long-distance just to inquire about her health. " In a letter, Rose invites next door neighbor John Truett (spelled Truitt in the letter) to her Princeton University-bound brother Lon's going-away party, to be held in the Smith's parlor. While dressing upstairs the evening of the party, Esther confides to Rose: Esther: I'm going to let John Truett kiss me tonight. Rose: Esther Smith! Esther: Well, if we're going to get married, I may as well start it. Rose: Nice girls don't let men kiss them until after they're engaged. Men don't want the bloom rubbed off. Esther: Personally, I think I have too much bloom. Maybe that's the trouble with me. (She squeezes her cheeks. ) Esther makes a grand entrance down the staircase, greets a few guests, and then deliberately backs into her brother who is talking to John Truett. Esther and John are finally introduced. The youthful dancing party begins in the cramped confines of the Smith parlor. Young Lon participates in the music making - he and Esther sing and the group dances to a lively hoe-down called "Skip to My Lou" - a traditional production number. By the end of the dance, Esther has been gently pushed into John's arms. In their nightclothes at the foot of the stairs, John discovers 'Tootie' and Agnes watching the party hosted by their big sisters: "There are mice in the house, two of them. " Tootie is allowed to stay up and sing a song for her elders. She chooses "I Was Drunk Last Night, Dear Mother" and shows off, to everyone's delight: I was drunk last night, dear Mother I was drunk the night before But if you forgive me Mother I'll never get drunk anymore Esther joins a night-gowned 'Tootie' in a spontaneous, delightful little song and cakewalk to "Under the Bamboo Tree, " complete with straw hats and canes in a home-style minstrel shuffle. Later, as the guests depart, Esther has hidden Truett's hat as a way to detain him and make him the last one to leave. As they say goodbye and shake hands many times together, she makes an "untoward request. " She asks him to accompany her throughout the house to turn off the gas lights - a beautifully-executed scene in which the camera moves non-stop from light to light. As the lights are extinguished in the parlor, the dining room and the landing, she shyly courts the boy next door in the darkness - hoping (in vain) to be offered a goodnight kiss. As she gazes at him with undisguised love, he compliments her: "You don't need any beauty sleep. " She renders a sweet old song to him: "Over the Bannister. " At its conclusion, he shakes her hand goodbye one more time, awkwardly complimenting her a second time: You've got a mighty strong grip for a girl. In the final scene of the summer vignette, Esther joins an expectant crowd of young people (the ladies are sporting colorful flowery hats and shirt-waist dresses) - they are friends that have gathered for a picnic to ride a trolley bound for the under-construction fairgrounds (the fair is still six months away). She is wearing a black outfit trimmed with white without a hat, nervously noticing and despairing that John, her love, hasn't arrived yet. As they begin to ride off - to the "clang, clang" of the trolley bells, they all belt out "The Trolley Song. " It's an extravagant five-minute production number: Clang, clang, clang went the trolley Ding, ding, ding went the bell Zing, zing, zing went my heartstrings As we started for Huntingdon dell... Without singing, an anxious and tense Esther moves around the train amidst the swirl of pastel colors and song, continuing to look for John. He is late as usual from basketball practice and must run after the trolley to catch it. She is relieved when he runs after the trolley, catches it and boards - she happily finishes the song on a high note, leading all of her friends in her musical tale of flirtation with a handsome man: I went to lose a jolly, hour on the trolley, and lost my heart instead With his light brown derby and his bright green tie He was quite the handsomest of men I started to yen, then I counted to ten, then I counted to ten again [In a scene filmed but later excised from the final release of the film, Esther and John stroll through and explore the unfinished fairgrounds - John carries her in his arms through one of the muddier sections of the grounds.
